Bramlett

The best school I ever attended was Bramlett Elementary School in Oxford, Mississippi. Every thing I needed to know about the next 40 years of life I learned in that school. How to be polite, how to get along with different people, of course how to read and write. Can you believe I learned how to study and prepare for highschool and college exams in the first and second grade. I remember one of my first school assignments was to memorize the 50 states and there capitals. Can you imagine doing this in the first grade. I remember coming home each night, and I think we had a week to complete the task. But I remember every night repitiously writing down the states in a notebook sitting next to our old living-room lamp in our little house. I can't explain how this elementary assignment developed my academic preparation along with my mothers commitment to making sure we always set aside time for homework each night. It was something I looked forward to. It was an expectation drilled into my daily routine that exist until today. Even as an adult, I have my daily alotted time for new skills. Also during that time period, I remember completing my first multi-page research paper. I used an old set of encylopedia britanica books from our home bookcase. My research paper was on fish that live both in the water and on the land. It was my first research paper and my first time reading in front of an audience. I remember that nervousness and excitement of not knowing what to expect. And I remember the feelings of relief and success after completing the task. I remember my class being intrigued by my paper and topic and I remember after I was done that the class clapped and asked a ton of questions like I was an expert on walking fish. These are some of my early experiences that triggered my life-long pursuit of knowledge. Early on I learned the power of sharing knowledge to create new friendships. I would love to find and give my first grade and second teachers big hugs. I never had teachers that poured so much into my early development as those Southern Ladies. My early education and experiences growing up in the southern United States created a love learning in all forms form reading books to watching daily Sesame Street episodes with Big Bird and The Grouch, and don't forget about Mr. Rogers! Everything I needed to know about life I learned in Elementary in Oxford, Mississippi....
